How many sessions?
Several sessions are frequently performed rather than expecting a single treatment to produce the complete result.

Sun protection is especially important after light or laser treatments because the skin may be more susceptible to pigmentation changes.
Pigmentation Therapy
What does it treat?
It is designed to address different types of spots or pigmentation depending on their cause.
It may be used for:
- Sun spots
- Lentigines
- Sun-damage-related pigmentation
- Some superficial spots
- Uneven pigmentation
IPL and certain lasers can target melanin and help reduce selected types of pigmentation.
How does it work?
Energy is absorbed by melanin.
The light is converted into heat and affects pigmented structures, after which the body progressively eliminates the pigment.
Because of this, some spots may temporarily appear darker, dry, or have a “crust-like” appearance before gradually becoming lighter.
Not all pigmentation should be treated in the same way.
It is not correct to assume that every dark spot is a candidate for IPL. Melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and other conditions can behave differently and, in some individuals, energy-based treatments may even worsen pigmentation.
This is why the type of pigmentation should first be identified before treatment.
What results can you expect?
The main goal is:
Less pigmentation + more even tone + a brighter appearance.
More than one session and maintenance may be necessary, together with a consistent sun protection routine.
Main precaution
The most important risk is causing an additional pigmentation change, especially when treatment parameters are not appropriate for the person’s skin phototype.
Vascular Therapy
What does it treat?
This treatment focuses on concerns related to visible blood vessels or redness.
Depending on the equipment, it may be used for:
- Telangiectasias
- Visible capillaries
- Some superficial spider veins
- Facial erythema / redness
- Some vascular manifestations of rosacea
How does it work?
Here, the primary target is not melanin.
The main target is hemoglobin inside the blood vessels.
Energy is absorbed by the vessel → temperature increases → the vessel is damaged or coagulated → the body progressively eliminates it.

Face
- Nose
- Cheeks
- Chin
What might the patient observe?
- Temporary redness
- Inflammation
- Temporary darkening of the vessel
- Small temporary marks
Body
- Superficial spider veins
- Certain vascular lesions
Treatment response
In facial vascular treatments, the AAD notes that many patients may achieve a significant reduction in visible vessels after 1–3 treatments, although results depend on the type of lesion and laser used.
Not every vessel can be treated with IPL.
Some vessels require specific vascular lasers, such as certain pulsed-dye lasers or other specialized devices.
Acne Therapy
What is it?
It is the use of certain light or laser systems as part of acne management.
Depending on the device used, it may help reduce certain components of acne, especially inflammatory lesions.
How does it work?
It depends greatly on the type of technology.
Some light systems may act on mechanisms related to inflammation and acne-associated bacteria.
Other treatments combine different technologies to address sebum, inflammation, acne lesions and clogged pores.

Does one session eliminate acne?
Not necessarily.
This is an important point when offering this treatment in an aesthetic setting.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that light and laser therapies can reduce acne, but they are rarely sufficient on their own to completely eliminate it.
Several sessions
Many people need several sessions and, depending on the individual case, additional treatments may be necessary.
What about scarring?
This is different.
Some lasers can be used to treat acne scars by stimulating skin remodeling and collagen production.
However, not every treatment described as “Acne Therapy” is designed to treat acne scars.
